Several years ago, Forbes Magazine interviewed many CEOs to uncover a “day in the life” of the most successful business professionals out there. A number of elements were found:
- Meetings and interactions with people, either formally or informally
- Interviews with new employees
- Engaging in organizational activities
- Leading process improvement meetings
- Working on projects
- Traveling
- Building relationships with key customers
- Testing new products, ideas, or services for the company
If you are a CEO, you can probably relate to a number of these tasks and more! There’s no doubt that executives are key leaders for an organization, and thus have a lot of pressure on their shoulders. With ongoing communication efforts and projects to complete, it can become very easy to feel exhausted, stressed, and overwhelmed. When it comes to your mental health, there are a number of work life aspects that can perpetuate stress, anxiety, depression, and everything you don’t want (or need) for your personal and professional success:
- Being unable to step away from technology (constantly checking emails, answering phone calls, etc.)
- Traveling so often that you are unable to spend quality time with loved ones
- Placing perfectionism upon yourself and criticizing yourself if business projects do not go according to plan
- Staying up late to work, leading to little or poor-quality sleep
- Failing to properly disperse work-related tasks to others who are capable of completing them
If you find yourself guilty of any of the above circumstances, consider taking a step back and making subtle changes to your day-to-day life in an attempt to improve your happiness, health, and total wellbeing. According to Medium, a 2010 study involving 242 entrepreneurs uncovered that 49% of them were experiencing a mental health condition, with depression being the highest reported condition. Marc Andreessen of Netscape explained the scope of mental health concerns with business professionals as this: “You flip rapidly from day to day…there is so much uncertainty and so much risk around practically everything you are doing. The level of stress that you’re under generally will magnify things…Sound like fun?”
If you believe you are experiencing symptoms of a mental illness, speak with a healthcare professional and obtain a diagnosis soon. Treatment is available and working towards recovery on these issues can greatly improve your daily happiness and success capabilities of your company because you will be much better equipped to deal with the challenges at hand.
